How To Leverage The Power Of Compound To Supercharge Your Success
When most of us think about the term “compound” we tend to think of how it applies to interest rates on pensions, the stock market, bonds and other financial investments.
Typically, it describes how incremental increases over time eventually lead to exponential positive gains.
But have you ever thought about how comound applies to your life and where you are right now. You will after this…
Before we get in to this article, I’d like to make you an offer.
In fact, I’d like to make you two offers.

Now some of you might be thinking “is this a trick question?”
And you might be right.
But equally, it could be a trick TRICK question.

You’ve just secured yourself a life-changing, bank busting (albeit imaginary) amount of money that should see you and your family financially secure, and some, for the rest of your life.
But before you give yourself a pat on the back for making what maybe seemed like an obvious choice, let’s see how you would have fared up by choosing the penny, and for those of you that did here’s what you won…
On day 5, you’ve accumalted the grand old sum of 16p.
Do any of you £3million’ers want to switch sides yet – I’ll let you off on this one if you do?
On day 10, you’ve netted £5.12.
For those that chose the penny, are you regretting your choice yet? I’ll let you swap – but you can’t come back.
On day 15 you’re at……………………………………£163.84
Sure, it’s free money but it’s not quite £3million.
OK so day 20, mabye things start to ramp up a little bit now and you get a bit more bang for your buck (or penny).
You’re still at £5,242.88
OK so this is your final chance.
No matter which side you picked originally, I’m going to give you one last chance to swap to the other side but once you’ve made that decision, and I mean it this time, you’ve got to stick with it.
We’re on the home stretch now, let’s take a look at day 25 and see what has happened to your orginal 1p.
You might be able to pay off the mortgage, or maybe get that M-Sport you’ve had your eye on and don’t get me wrong, it’s a good chunk of change – but it’s not £3million.
But then, compound kicks in.
At day 27, you’re at £671,088.64
At day 28 you’re closing in with £1,3421,77.28
At day 29 you’re within reaching distance with a cool £2,684,354.56
At day 30, you leave those that chose the cheque for dust as you count up your £5,368,709.12
And at day 31 you hit the jackpot with £10,737,418.24.
So, if you chose the penny, well done.
When I ask this question to an audience, typically I find that about 80-90% choose the cheque.
It sounds so obvious to begin with doesn’t it?
Now you’re probably thinking that’s a pretty neat conversation starter for dinner parties, but what on earth has it got to do with high performance?
And the answer, is everything…
You see, where you are in life right now, this very moment as you’re reading this article is not the result of the efforts you made yesterday, last week or maybe even last year.
It’s the compounding of your habits and routines over the last several years and decades.
The habits and routines that you adopted five, ten, fifteen, even twenty years ago are what go you to where you are now and if you’re not happy with the results you’re getting, you need to change something that you’re doing daily.
Sustainable and long-term success isn’t acquired off the back of one or two chance events.
It’s built up over years of great habits and consistent routines.
And that is one of the crystal clear differentiators between the super-successful and those that never achieve what they knew they could.
The former consciously chose to adopt excellent habits and high performance routines.
They take control of their life, every single day.
They understand that life isn’t a journey, it’s a process.
The latter don’t.
They jump into the river of life and let the current take them downstream, just going with the flow and leaving their destiny left in the hands of chance.
As Darren Hardy, the founder of Success Magazine, so rightly puts it:
“You’ll never change something in your life until you change something that you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.”
So for those of you that are looking for the silver bullet to success, that’s it right there in this quote.
The scary part about that is that your success for the short-term future is now out of your hands.
It’s already been decided for you by the routines and habits (or lack of ) that have been a part of your life up to now.
But what it also means is that you have the power to make changes now that your future self will thank you for.
And every day that you wait to make those changes is antoher day added on to how long it will take you to reach your goals and achieve your ambitions.
So, what are these habits and routines that we’re talking about here.
Well firstly, I have a sneaking suspiscion that you already know a fair few of them.
These are the things that deep down, you KNOW you should be doing – but you just don’t.
And therein lies the biggest issue with these habits and routines.
They’re not rocket science, they’re simple.
But because they’re simple to do, they’re also simple not to do and most of us just never bother to make the effort – but then complain and make excuses when we don’t turn out to be the successes that we thought we should.
What also stops many of us from achieving our true potential is that none of these equals instant gratification.
You have to have faith in the power of compound because the chances are that by implementing these high performacne habits and routines that you know you should, you perhaps won’t see the results for days, weeks, months, years – even decades.
And because we now live in a world where everything is NOW NOW NOW, people just aren’t prepared to stay the course because they want to feel, see and taste the benefits yesterday.
As you’ve seen from the penny example above, the real return comes on the final stretch – as is the case for wealth.
Most have fallen off long before they get there having not experienced the success they wanted when it was actually before their time and if they’d just stuck at it, who knows what they could have achieved.
Most multimillionaires don’t acquire the mass of their wealth until they’re well into their 50’s, after decades of working all hours god sends, sacrifing health, family and friends, perfecting their craft and practicing high performance habits, routines and hacks.
But that’s no longer the story that we hear from social media and PR companies.
We’re more interested in the “overnight” successes who became rich beyond their wildest dreams within the blink of an eye.
And don’t get me wrong, there are examples of that out there but they’re few and far between and as the old saying goes, easy come easy go.
Behind 99% of “overnight” successes you’ll find decades of hard-work, hustle, grind and high performance habits – we just don’t want to hear about that – it sounds too much like hard work!
And don’t get me wrong.
Staying disciplined to excellent habits and success routines is hard work.
It takes effort and there are so many temptations and distractions that can take you right off course in an instant.
We make decisions all day every day that, without us realising, take us closer or further away from our goals and becoming the person we know we can be.
Getting up early to get some exercise in every day is hard. Choosing an apple instead of a doughtnut is hard – and day to day you might never notice a difference.
But after three years of making those same decisions daily – how you look, how you think and who you have become will be drastically different.
That sticking power, that self-discipline, resilience, willpower and commitment to their success is what separates the high performers of this world from everyone else.

The biggest mistake I see people making is trying to go from 0 to 100 too quickly and that for most of us that’s a recipe for disaster.
