High Performance Hacks | Prioritise
In this series of High Performance Hacks, I’ll be delivering the practical actions, tactics and strategies used by the world’s best high performers across all fields to help them out-perform, out-work and out-shine their peers.
In this article, I’m we’re going to take a look at how an effective To Do List can light an absolute fire underneath your productivity and slingshot you towards you goals faster and with less friction…
I’m being dead serious when I tell you that a To Do List literally changed my life.
A “To Do List”………really?
Yes, you read right.
This seemingly simple high performance hack of writing down all the tasks you have to complete for the next 12 hours can be INCREDIBLY powerful.
But only if you have the discipline to do it every day and more importantly, you have the resolve to execute on the tasks you set for yourself.
Here’s why this will change your life.
Perhaps the most important part of becoming a high performance person is working out the path you want to follow and who you want to become.
It’s why most of the population never get to where they want to be, because they never actually took the time to work out where that was in the first place!
You can’t hit a target if it’s not there.
In my free Seven Day High Performance Masterclass, you’ll discover the values that lie deep within you that will enable you to craft a clear plan of the path that you want your life to follow and all that you want to achieve along the way so that you can live feeling truly fulfilled – successful and happy.

And don’t get me wrong, without having that certainty, clarity and purpose these high performance hacks will still bring about lasting change for the better – but it does limit their effectiveness.
When you do have that clarity of vision, perhaps the most important step that you can take is to break down the actions required to get there and then take action on them every. single. day.
Again, In my free 7 Day High Performance Masterclass, I walk you through the exact process that you can use to break down your goals so you know that every day, you’re living on purpose and moving closer towards that amazing future you have visualised and is totally within your grasp.
Most people allow their day to run them, meaning they deal with whatever life throws at them and leave no time to get the meaningful pro-active work done that will help them to progress.
If you don’t control your day, your day will control you.
Does that sound familiar?
Starting out each day with an action plan will bring about increases in your productivity that you just cannot believe until you experience it for yourself.
Working with a good template will allow you to navigate through all of your tasks and work out your “One Thing”.
What is the one thing that you can do today that will move you closer towards your goals and ambitions?
The “One Thing” has had countless books, seminars, videos etc. dedicated to it and here’s why.
If every day you focus on doing the most important “one thing” that will move you closer towards your desired destination, you will get there a hell of a lot quicker.
The trouble for most of us is that we don’t take the time to work out what the one thing is and we’re just in “reactive” mode all day, every day.
We’re also focusing on several “one things” at a time meaning that are focus is diluted, and so are our results.
That’s how whole weeks, months, years and even decades pass without people moving just one step closer towards their goals.
You can tread water more enthusiastically then everyone else around you, you can do it for longer, with more passion, energy and commitment than anyone else – but you’re still going to end up right where you started.
Most of us are treading water.
You don’t win life in defensive mode, you have to play on offense.
When you do one thing every day, you build up unstoppable momentum.
You create opportunities that enable you to progress faster.
You open doors that you would not have known even existed.
And you take control of your life and your destiny.
After you’ve mapped out the day’s tasks, the next part is to rank them in order of priority.
Start each day with the most important (note, “urgent” is not necessarily “important”) task you can complete and by eating that “toad” first, you’ll become unstoppable.
Then, complete each subsequent activity one by one until they’re all ticked off.
And it’s not just the power of working on your “one thing” that makes a to do list so effective and sending your productivity through the roof.
Whenever I’m having a conversation with someone who is stressed because they feel they have too much to handle, perhaps nine times out of ten that stress is immediately relieved when they take a couple of minutes to actually create a list.
Most of the stress comes from not actually knowing what to do next and overestimating the workload, all of which is addressed with a good to do list.
The time you’ll get back from not wondering about what to do next will add up to hours per week which only adds to the flywheel of working in a more productive way in the first place.
There are loads of theories about how to “chunk” your focus and how often to take breaks to maintain your effectiveness, but we don’t need to get into that right now – just make a simple to do list a staple part of your routine first.
And then commit to yourself to stay disciplined to it, not to go for the easiest “quick wins” first and you’ll be blown away by your output – as will your colleagues and associates.
The best time to create your list is at the end of each day.
Everything is still fresh in your mind and when you get in the next day, you can hit the ground running.
Whilst everyone else is still making cups of coffee and talking about last night’s episode of “Love Island”, you’ve probably already completed more meaningful work than most others get done in the entire morning, or even day!
I’ll repeat the quote from earlier because I think it’s worth saying twice.
Either you run the day, or the day runs you.
People who run their day win at life.
And high performance people run their day, every day.
